PENN STATE HAZLETON
The Davis College Falcons started off the new volleyball season with a thrilling 3-2 win on the road on Wednesday in a non-conference match-up at Penn State Hazleton.
The visiting Falcons came out hot and dominated the first 2 sets of the match, winning both by a 25-16 margin. The host Nittany Lions then made some lineup adjustments and rattled off 8 straight points to jump out to a 10-2 advantage in the third set and carried that momentum to a 25-17 win in the third. The 4th set was back and forth as neither team led by more than 4 points. A kill by Davis’ Linnea Sweeney cut the score to 21-22 but Penn State would go on to score the final 3 points of the 4th set to even the match at 2-2. In the deciding 5th set, both teams battled hard with Penn State taking an early 10-7 lead. The Falcons aggressive attacks forced a few Penn State errors and on game point, newcomer Braedyn Mims came up big with a game winning block.
Falcons junior, Erica Stockwell, had a huge defensive game with 50 digs on the evening. Transfer, Michaela McLeod, led the attack with 9 kills and Loryn Sanders picked right back up where she was last year leading the team with 25 assists.
The Falcons (1-0) get a week off and return to action on Wednesday, 9/12, at Penn State Schuylkill. That match will start at 5:oo p.m.
